Shaun Cansdell and Adrian Buchan advance to Round 4 of Australian Open of Surfing – Surfing News
Australia’s Shaun Cansdell and Adrian Buchan continued to impress in the men’s division of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Australian Open of Surfing, winning their respective Round 3 (Round of 48) heats that went down at Manly Beach
in New South Wales, Australia, on Friday, February 17.
With his win in the third heat of the third round, Cansdell advanced through to Round 4. America’s Nat Young claimed the runner-up position to accompany him into the next round, while Australia’s Brent Savage and James Taipan Wood rounded out the third and
fourth position respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
Buchan’s triumph in the fourth heat carried him through to the next round, while New Zealand’s Billy Stairmand successfully extended his life in the event as well after finishing in second place. Portugal’s Tiago Pires and Australia’s Lincoln Taylor rounded
out the third and fourth place respectively. Both the surfers got removed from the contention for the event title as a result.
Cansdell remained patient during the third heat as he awaited the arrival of a relatively juicy wave. Locking his first business-wave, he posted a 5.37 on the score-board and later added an additional 7.00 to his account to finish with a heat-total of 12.37
points.
Young tried hard to get past Cansdell on the score-board, but luck did not seem to be on his side and he only managed to catch 3 waves, the best of which earned him a 5.50 and 6.83. As a result, he was forced to settle for runner-up place.
Savage finished in third place with a heat-total of 10.90 points, while Wood rounded out the bottom position with 8.20 points.
The fourth heat saw Buchan walk away with a comfortable win despite scoring a heat-total of 11.83 points, which comprised of a 5.33 and 6.50-point wave.
Stairmand did not exactly exhibit a solid performance, scoring a mere 4.27 and 4.73 off his top-two waves. However, the score still proved sufficient to carry him through to the next round.
Pires finished in third place with a heat-total of 8.60 points, while Taylor rounded out the bottom position with a two-wave total of 8.47. The lacklustre performances by the two surfers led to their elimination from the competition.
The surfing action continued at Manly Beach with the remaining heats of men’s Round 3 at Australian Open of Surfing.
