Shaun Joubert and Jack Freestone power into Round 4 at San Miguel Pro Zarautz
South Africa’s Shaun Joubert and Australia’s Jack Freestone emerged triumphant in their respective Round 3 (Round of 48) heats that went down at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz that went down at the main event
site of Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Friday, August 31.
While Joubert advanced to Round 4 (Round of 24) after claiming top honours in the fifth heat, France’s Marc Lacomare accompanied him after finishing in runner-up place. France’s Maxime Huscenot and Argentina’s Leandro Usuna finished in third and fourth place
respectively, getting eliminated from the competition as a result.
Chile’s Guillermo Satt moved alongside Freestone into the next round after claiming second position in the 6th heat. Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz finished in third place, while Brazil’s Messias Felix had to settle for bottom position. Both the surfers
were removed from the contention for the event title as a result.
With strong onshore winds and three-to-four foot waves prevailing at the main event site on the latest day of the competition, the surfers had their work cut out for them. Navigating through the challenging waves to get hold of a relatively juicy wave was
not at all easy, though the surfers could not afford to let the conditions get better of them.
Pitted against Lacomare, Huscenot and Usuna in the fifth heat, Joubert put on a remarkable performance to take the win. The South African surfer squeezed an impressive 8.00 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with a 6.70-point ride, thus
finishing with a heat-total of 14.70 points.
Lacomare collected a couple of scores in the six-point range to finish with a heat-total of 13.13 points, which proved sufficient to add him to the Round 4 line-up.
Huscenot finished third with a heat-total of 12.27 points, while Usuna had to settle for last position after registering a heat-total of 9.30 points.
The next heat saw Freestone walk away with an impressive win after scoring a 7.67 and 6.87 off his best-two waves, concluding the heat with a heat-total of 14.54 points.
Satt appeared to be in a good form as well, but had to settle for runner-up place in the end after finishing with a heat-total of 13.57 points, which included a 6.50 and 7.07 points.
Both Zietz and Felix got eliminated from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 10.67 and 9.43 points respectively.
