Shaun Joubert and Jordy Smith victorious in Round 2 of Mr. Price Pro Ballito
The fifth and sixth heat of Mr. Price Pro Ballito’s round of 48 (Round 2) went down at the Surfers Beach in Ballito, South Africa, on Wednesday, July 6.
South Africa’s Shaun Joubert emerged triumphant in the fifth heat to confirm his place in the Round of 24 (Round 3). His compatriot, Sean Holmes, finished in runner-up place to stay alive in the event. New Zealand’s Jay Quinn and Hawaii’s Sebastien Zietz
rounded out the third and fourth position, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The sixth heat saw another South African, Jordy Smith, prevail to go through to the next round. Hawaii’s Kiron Jabour rounded out the second position to extend his life in the competition. America’s Austin Ware and Cory Lopez were ejected from the competition
after finishing in third and fourth place respectively.
Joubert stole the show during the fifth heat with a combination of impressive open-faced carves during the heat. Earning 7.17 points off his first wave and soon adding an additional 4.17 to his account, he climbed to a heat-total of 11.34 points. The score
proved sufficient to earn him top honours.
During the post-heat interview, Joubert said, “We go around the world surfing one foot waves so it’s good to surf a bit of juice. I am a bit more comfortable when it’s bigger, all our waves in South Africa have some power so it’s definitely what I prefer.”
Holmes’ second place finish added to the joy of the local crowd. Earning 5.00 and 6.00 off his two best waves, he finished with a heat-total of 11.00 points to advance to the next round.
Quinn took third place after managing to finish with a two-wave total of 6.20 points, while Zietz finished in fourth place with a two-wave total of 4.53 points.
The winner from last year’s event, Smith, shone the brightest during his Round 2 heat. The South African just rode two waves and managed to collect the highest two-wave total of the heat. Scoring 6.17 off his first wave and 5.67 off his second, he finished
with a heat-total of 11.84 points.
“I was looking to get a quick start and I just wanted to wait for those really good ones. It’s a gamble but there are some great rides when you get them and it’s a lot of fun,” Smith said after the heat.
Jabour survived the heat after scoring 5.70 and 4.70 from his two best waves, to move to a heat-total of 10.40 points.
Ware and Lopez were unable to make a solid impact during the heat and looked completely out of rhythm. While Ware finished with a heat-total of 5.27 for third place, his countryman merely scored 2.37 in total from his two best waves.
