Brazil’s Messias Felix finished behind Joubert in second place during the ninth heat to secure his place in the next round. Puerto Rico’s Brian Toth finished in third place, while Basque Country’s Txaber Trojaola had to settle for a heat-total of 7.03 points. Both the surfers were consequently eliminated from the competition.
The 10th heat saw Australia’s Jack Freestone accompany Lacomare into the next round of the competition after finishing in runner-up place. America’s Jeffrey Lukasik and Spain’s Vicente Romero rounded out the bottom-two position after finishing with a heat-total of 10.54 and 8.64 points.
With some of the most talented young surfing talent from around the world in contention for the coveted prize and ASP ranking points on offer at the ASP 6-Star event, there was very little reason to doubt the entertainment that awaited the huge crowd in attendance at Zarautz.
Find himself pitted against Felix, Toth and Trojaola during the ninth heat, Joubert wasted no time in asserting his dominance in the four-man battle. Locking his first business-wave in the opening minutes of the heat, the South African surfer posted a 6.33 on the score-board. After a long and demanding search, he eventually backed it up with a 6.27-point ride to finish with a resultant heat-total of 12.60 points. The score held up until the end of the heat to see him through to victory.
Felix scored a 4.93 and 5.60 off his best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 10.53 points, which turned out to be enough to see him through into the next round.
Toth and Trojaola were unable to survive the heat after they concluded the heat with a two-wave total of 10.50 and 7.03 points respectively.
Lacomare put on an impressive performance to get the better of Freestone, Lukasik and Romero during the 10th heat. The French surfer earned a 7.17 off his first business-wave and went on to add an additional 6.07 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 13.24 points.
Freestone got off to an impressive start, managing to find a 7.00 point ride in the opening minutes of the heat, but failed to back it up with another decent score. Scoring a mere 3.90 off his second business-wave, the Australian surfer finished with a heat-total of 10.90 points. The effort paid off as he qualified for the next round.
Lukasik finished in third place with a heat-total of 10.54 points, while Romero finished behind him in last place after scoring a heat-total of 8.64 points. Both the surfers were consequently ejected from the competition.
