Shaun Marcum outplays Jon Garland as Milwaukee Brewers beat Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-1: MLB Update
The Milwaukee Brewers’ starter, Shaun Marcum outplayed Jon Garland, in the club’s 2-1 conquest in a low-scoring first outing, against the Los Angeles Dodgers at the Dodger Stadium, on Monday, May 16 to take 1-0 lead in the two-game series.
Marcum consumed just one run on five hits, allowed one walk and struck-out four batters over seven innings to earn his club their 20th win in the 2011 season and now has 5-1 record with 2.54 ERA. The Brewers, coming off a three-game sweep against the Pittsburgh Pirates, won their seventh off last nine games.
On the other hand, Jon Garland also tossed brilliantly to hold the Brewers scoreless in his first two innings. In the third inning though, he gave the Brewers’ first baseman Prince Fielder, a runs batted in (RBI) led off single to bear 0-1 deficit. However, he did not allow any run in the next inning, providing the Brewers a chance to tie the game.
The Dodgers’ Matt Kemp availed provided opportunity and hit a sacrifice fly to the centre of the field, tying the score one all in the bottom of the fourth inning. The game remained scoreless in the fifth inning due to striking pitches of both the pitchers.
Rickie Weeks, who entered in five for 28 with runners in scoring position, splintered 1-1 tie hitting a quick ground single to the left side of the field after Garland allowed a walk to Marcum with two out in sixth. Marcum then tossed scoreless seventh inning to cement the Brewers 15th road win in front of 35,346 spectators in field.
The reliever, Kameron Loe, and closer, John Axford, provided a strong back-up to Marcum and pitched scoreless innings secure their saves. Loe earned his eighth while Axford achieved ninth save of the season in cool windy day.
After Garland finished his six innings spell, allowing two runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out one batter over six innings, the Dodgers’ relievers made strong pitches.
Though the Dodgers’ relievers Kenley Jansen, Matt Guerrier, Scott Elbert and closer Mike MacDougal did not conceded any run over their small spells, yet they remained helpless to take his team past the Brewers.
Brian Knight was umpiring at home plate while Jerry Lyne, Bob Davison and D.J. Reyburn were umpiring on the first, second and third base, respectively.
