Shaun Marcum shuts down Cincinnati Reds in Milwaukee Brewers 8-1 victory – MLB News
Shaun Marcum tossed six strong innings on Wednesday, September 26 and the batters blazed as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-1 at Great American Ball Park. Cincinnati Reds defence completely collapsed as Brewers made the most out of it.
Marcum allowed only a run in his six solid innings with seven strike-outs, backed by equally strong bullpen which has now come to the fore as the Brewers’ strength. Reds’ Bronson Arroyo gave up four runs coupled with eight hits with only one strike-out in his six innings.
"I'm finally feeling back to where the ball's coming out of my hand with some life on it now and I'm getting the movement on the pitches I need," he said.
Reds who had won the previous game 4-2 could not continue their dominance. Although Joey Votto apparently made a good start with his hit to deep left in the first inning, giving the Reds a 1-0 lead, Brewers' batters altered the outlook of the game from the third inning onward.
Third inning saw Brewers score three runs; Norichika Aoki smashed a homer followed by an RBI double and then Corey Hart’s single, making it 3-1 for the Brewers. Jeff Bianchi hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to take the lead to 4-1 prompting Reds to bring in Logan Ondrusek as relief pitcher.
Ryan Braun smashed a big two-run homer in the seventh to solidify the Brewers’ lead. As Sam LeCure came to mound, this time it was Norichika Aoki again who doubled to deep right to give the Brewers a 7-1 edge in the game.
Jonathan Lucroy then homered in the ninth against Alfredo Simon to almost seal Brewers' victory. Jose Veras came as a closer to end the game with an 8-1 victory for the Brewers.
Brewers' team manager Ron Roenicke was ecstatic and happy with the team’s splendid performance at this crucial stage.
"We're playing really good," manager Ron Roenicke said. "At this point where we've put ourselves, unfortunately we need help from somebody. But if we continue to play well, it gives us a chance that somebody can get hot and come in and beat them.”
The last game of the three-game series will be played on Thursday.
