Shaun Marsh out of ODI series, to be replaced by Callum Ferguson
Shaun Marsh was ruled out of the rest of the ODI series against Sri Lanka due to a back injury. Marsh will be replaced by Callum Ferguson for the remaining two ODIs.
Marsh had hurt his back in his innings of 31 against Sri Lanka at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and did not take field throughout the second innings of the game. Sri Lanka went on to defeat Australia in that
first ODI by a narrow, one-wicket margin thanks to a ninth wicket stand of 132 runs between Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga.
Marsh’s replacement is Ferguson, a middle-order batsman from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Australia-c844. Ferguson has shown good form since returning from his own injury and smacked a century for his domestic side in the Sheffield
Shield. Ferguson was a part of the Australian ODI side till the Champions Trophy in 2009 but a knee injury forced him out of international cricket for more than a year.
Ferguson made his comeback in the recently concluded Champions League T20 and batted well for Southern Australia Redbacks, propelling them to the semi-finals of the tournament.
Earlier, even the Australian coach, Tim Nielsen had backed Ferguson to play a role in the Ashes later this month. Nielsen had said that Ferguson had a good chance of being selected in the Australian Test
match squad for the Ashes.
However, Ferguson’s selection to the ODI squad does not mean that he will be in the playing eleven. Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who had missed the first ODI of the series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 because he
had gone to attend his grandmother’s funeral, is back and will take the place of Marsh in the side.
This will mean that Michael http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120, Michael Hussey and Cameron White will also be pushed one spot down the order. Ponting bats at the number three position.
