Shaun Murphy clobbers Marcus Campbell, 10-1 – 2011 World Snooker Championship
Shaun Murphy outplayed Marcus Campbell, last night, by a frame score of 10-1 in the first round of the 2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship, which is being held at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield,
England.
It was completely a one-man show in the first session of the game, as the world number six, Murphy, almost whitewashed his opponent to end his campaign with a 9-0 lead. The Magician, Murphy,
in the meanwhile
showcased magnificent breaks of 93, 100, 56, 68, 53, 53, 75, 99 and 96.
Meanwhile for the thirty-eight-year-old Scotland’s professional, Campbell, who previously outplayed Matt Selt in the final qualifying round, it was a nightmare. He was in danger of becoming the only second
player after Eddie Charlton to be completely whitewashed at the home of snooker, Crucible Theatre.
However the Dumbarton Destroyer, Campbell, managed in putting one frame on the board in the second session with a dominant break of 62 before his opponent rounded off his victory in the following tenth
frame with another classy break of 61.
Murphy, in the post presentation party, said "I put myself under pressure looking for the whitewash. I never had a chance in the opening frame."
However the world number twenty-eight, Campbell admitted that he couldn’t handle the pressure of playing at the home of snooker. He said “I had felt good at 4-0 but he put me under so much pressure. The
Crucible is a special place, but it’s made to make you feel uncomfortable.”
Campbell admitted he knew there was 'no chance' of a comeback but felt satisfaction of at least making a fight of it.
Former 2005 world champion, Murphy, is now set-up a potential second round clash with the former three-time world champion, Ronnie O’Sullivan. It will be one of the most interesting clashes in the last-16
of this year’s Betfred.com World Snooker Championship, as the Rocket, O’Sullivan, has also cruised into the second round after an impressive 10-2 win over the Spaceman, Dominic Dale.
This is the first time ever that Ronnie O’Sullivan didn’t enter the Crucible Theatre as a favourite, but his two 147 attempts in the round one were good enough to make him a strong contestant for the championship
again.
