Shaun Murphy excited about 2011 UK Championship being held in York Barbican Centre: Snooker news
Former world snooker champion, England’s Shaun Murphy had a convincing run in 2011 Australian Goldfields Open, as he reached the semi-final stage of the very first ranking event in Australia at the
Bendigo Stadium in Victoria. The Englishman is now excited on the prospect of the upcoming UK Championship being held in the York Barbican Centre, in December.
The Magician ousted Andrew Higginson, Rory McLeod and Matthew Selt in his 2011 Australian Goldfields Open run to make it against compatriot Stuart Bingham in the semi-finals. He couldn’t maintain
his winning moment at that stage however, and despite his experience and impressive game, lost to 35-year-old Bingham and crashed out of the event.
However, the world number five is satisfied with his performance and now looks ahead to make his presence felt in other snooker tournaments. Along with his ambition to play superbly in the upcoming
events, he is also happy for the return of UK Championship to its actual home, the York Barbican Centre.
While speaking to the local media, Murphy said, “I think it's fantastic news. Funnily enough it's not somewhere where I have the greatest snooker memories and I've never done that well in the two
or three times I've played there. But York is a fabulous city around Christmas time and there aren't too many nicer places in the UK, so it's great news.”
The former UK Championship winner added, “Hopefully I can get in the right type of form and play well there this year. None of us were ever sure why it got moved in the first place. It's a fantastic
venue and fantastic for snooker. Yorkshiremen love their snooker and they, along with us, will be really pleased the tournament is back there.”
World Snooker Chairman, Barry Hearn, made the decision of bringing the UK Championship back to the York Barbican Centre. The venue had already hosted UK Championship event from 2001 to 2006 in the
past but then it was shifted to the other venue. This time, York Barbican will organise the event again from December 3 to 11 where all the big guns of snooker will battle for the second most prestigious title.
