Shaun Murphy hits quarters beating Tom Ford in Round 2: 2012 Australian Goldfields Open
Former World Snooker Championship and the UK Championship winner from England, Shaun Murphy had a tussling first round match of 2012 Australian Goldfields Open snooker event against Scotland’s Marcus Campbell and hardly survived his battle by the score line
of 5-4 to book his second round spot.
In the second round game, he was up against compatriot Tom Ford, who toppled down Dominic Dale of Wales in his first round encounter. Murphy performed up to the mark against Ford and dominated the game tremendously to push his opponent down by the score
line of 5-1. Shaun has made his way impressively to the quarter-final stage of the tournament.
The former champ did not feel any pressure at all against Ford and smoothly continued his good game to unsettle his opponent.
In his post match interview with World Snooker, Murphy said, “I knew all I was missing was a little bit of confidence and it's amazing what that first round win can do for you. Today, I went out there knowing I could win and I was pleased with how I played.”
He added, “I was a little bit lucky at times and Tom had some really bad luck, he had a couple of bad kicks at the wrong times and lost position and a couple of safety shots where he left me reds when he couldn't have known that he was going to. But when
I got my chances, I took them.”
Ford claimed the first frame of the match with a superb break of 50 points to nudge Murphy 0-1 down trying to build some pressure on him. However, he failed to achieve this because Murphy bounced back brilliantly into the game and grabbed the next three
frames of the first session to snatch the lead from Ford by the score line of 3-1.
Ford did not have a chance to get back into the game and challenge Murphy for the quarter-final spot. On the other hand, the Magician took the first two frames of the second session to confirm his berth in the quarters winning the match by the score line
of 5-1. Murphy looks to be in superb form and it will be exciting to see how far he can go in the tournament.
