Shaun Murphy ousts Rory McLeod to reach quarterfinals of 2011 Australian Goldfields Open
England’s Shaun Murphy surged into the quarter-final stage of the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open after beating Rory McLeod by the scoreline of 5-1 in second round.
The 28-year-old Murphy will meet Matthew Selt or Stephen Hendry in the quarter-final clash at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria. Murphy is hopeful of having a strong run in the current season.
Murphy reached second round of the event after he ousted compatriot Andrew Higginson in Last 32 by 5-3 to set up his clash with McLeod. The match-up was completely dominated by Murphy, who didn't let McLeod come to the baize.
While talking to the local media after the match, Murphy said, “Any victory is a good one and I'm through to the last eight so it's been a good start to the season. This has been my first time in Australia and I've been a week in Brisbane with some friends
and had a great time seeing a lovely part of the country.”
The former world snooker champion is disappointed he missed this year’s World Cup Snooker. He didn’t have enough ranking points to be the part of England’s world cup team as compared to Mark Selby and Ali Carter. However, The Magician aims to earn more ranking
points so that he can take part in the World Cup Snooker next year.
“I can't speak highly enough of the team in charge of World Snooker and all the players should be playing in these events. In a funny way not being at the World Cup could help me out as I'm in the right sleep pattern as I've been here for a week, while others
may feel tired so I might be able to sneak through,” he added.
Murphy has started the new season with strong determination and he believes missing the world cup this year will work as a motivation for him in the upcoming events and he will use this disappointment to win tournaments. He will be facing the legendary Stephen
Hendry or Matthew Selt in his quarter-final clash at the Bendigo Stadium in Victoria.
