Shaun Murphy survives Marcus Campbell battle to hit Round 2 of 2012 Australian Goldfields Open
Second edition of the Australian Goldfields Open snooker tournament is underway at the Bendigo Stadium arena in Victoria. So far, the Top 16 have produced some outstanding snooker clashes at the baize. The tournament has received a lot of support from the
people of Victoria and has provided some amazing moments of snooker at the arena.
In a recent first round clash, the former World Snooker Championship winner from England’ Shaun Murphy faced the Scotsman Marcus Campbell and was able to beat him by the score line of 5-4 after a tremendous game play from the Scotsman. Both potters went
neck-and-neck from the start of the match and dragged the game into the decisive frame where Murphy was victorious.
After winning the match, Murphy spoke to World Snooker, “I thought it was a really good game up until the break. I thought we both played quite high-quality standard, didn't make many mistakes and I was pleased to be 3-1 up.”
He added, “But it's been a long time since I won a game in a ranking event, I think it's back to late February in the World Open in Hainan and those demons came back to haunt me. I was really nervous in the end. I had chances at 4-1, 4-2, 4-3 and just couldn't
do it and in the end was lucky to fall over the line.”
The clash began with a superb performance from the former UK Championship winner as he cruised into three frame lead by the score line of 3-0 pocketing some classy breaks of 65, 55 and 78 which pushed Campbell in a situation where he seemed to have dropped
down.
A stunning 51-point break from Murphy in the fourth frame put immense pressure on the Scotsman as it seemed that the score line was going to be 4-0 but Campbell got a chance to capitalise and he took advantage of that to hit his first frame lead.
In the second session of the game, Campbell dominated the game after Murphy moved 4-1 up. The Scot played impressively in the next three frames to pull level at 4-4 to push the game into the decider frame. The final frame of the game was quite tussling where
Murphy dominated and claimed the frame and the match victory.
