Shaun Murphy whitewashes Graeme Dott to claim 2011 Brazil Masters title at Costão do Santinho Resort
England’s Shaun Murphy played tremendously in the final of 2011 Brazil Masters and defeated Scotland’s Graeme Dott 5-0, to claim the invitational event’s title. The event was the first ever professional snooker tournament in the South American region. It
took 64 minutes for Murphy to nudge the Scotsman in the final match at Costão do Santinho Resort in Florianopolis.
The Englishman had a superb run during the tournament playing up to the mark in the previous rounds of 16-man invitation event. The Magician started his campaign with a whitewash victory over the Brazilian potter, Sobradinho de Dues, by the score line of
4-0. The local hero had no chances to come at the green baize and pot even a single frame for him.
Murphy faced compatriot, Ricky Walden in the quarter-final stage and clinched victory easily by 4-1, to make it into the semi-final stage against Legendary Stephen Hendry, who missed the opportunity to produce a maximum 147 during the event in his first
round match against Noel Rodrigues. However, Murphy made it easily into the final match against Dott, beating Hendry 5-1.
The 29-year-old Murphy showed a classy performance in the final encounter and grabbed all scrappy frames including two one-visits at 79-0 and 139-0. He pocketed some outstanding knocks of 81, 54, 79 and 139 during the game to unsettle his Scottish opponent
completely. The former world snooker champion displayed some excellent snooker skills in the ultimate competition of the event.
While speaking to local media after the victory at Florianopolis, Murphy said, “I got better with each match through the tournament, and played my best in the final. It's a great opportunity we've been given, to go around the world playing the game we love.”
He further added, “I'll have very fond memories of Brazil and I would love to see this become a regular event. The people here are very enthusiastic, they have enjoyed it and I think this is a market that can be expanded. This is a great time for snooker
and it's very exciting to be part of it, with so many new formats and new locations.”
The World Number Six cueist grabbed a cheque of $40,000 after winning the 2011 Brazil Masters snooker tournament at Costão do Santinho Resort in Florianopolis.
