Shaun White clinches men’s halfpipe title at 2012 Burton US Open – Snowboarding News
America’s Shaun White emerged triumphant in men’s halfpipe final at 6Star Burton US Open that continued at the Stratton Mountain in Vermont on Saturday, March 10.
Louie Vito secured the runner-up place while Benji Farrow rounded out the top-three to make it an all-American podium sweep.
The 30th anniversary of Burton US Open was not only serving as the final stop of the 2011/12 Ticket to Ride (TTR) World Snowboard Tour, but was also the last event of the Burton Global Series.
With the top riders from around the globe converging to Stratton Mountain to battle it out for the coveted event-title and TTR rating points on offer, the competition had turned out to be a thrilling affair with an even more exciting finish on Saturday.
The 25-year-old White had held on to the top spot on the podium at Burton US Open’s men halfpipe contest from 2006-08 before taking a break to concentrate on his skateboarding career.
Returning to the competition, he completely stole the show during the finals, putting together a phenomenal Run 1 that featured a huge method air, massive front-side double cork 1080, stale-fish grab, Cab double cork melon grab, front-side inverted 540 stale-fish,
backside double McTwist and an alley-oop backside rodeo. The spectacular run put the Californian rider in the lead with a score of 90.44, which held up until the end to seal the fate of the final in his favour.
“I really like coming in and throwing my best stuff and getting out of here,” White said during the podium interview. “For me I think it was an all-time run ... it was like the perfect scenario: I came out and stuck it. I was fresh, I was ready, and I hammered
it. I just knew what I came here to do.”
Vito came pretty close to White’s score after landing a pretty impressive Run 3 that included a double crippler, double cork backside rodeo indy grab, front-side double cork 1080 indy, Cab double cork 1080 indy and front-side inverted 1080 tail-grab.
Vermont-local Farrow also made the podium, his first on the Burton Global Open and TTR World Snowboard Tour, after landing an 86.00-point run that featured a front-side 1080, Cab 1080, front-side 1260 and a back-side 900.
Switzerland’s Iouri Podladtchikov failed to make much of an impact during Saturday’s final, finishing in seventh place. However, his result turned out to be enough to earn him the Burton Global Open Series as well as the TTR World Tour halfpipe title, courtesy
of his victory at the Burton European Open in Switzerland and the 6Star TTR World Snowboarding Championships in Norway.
The men’s halfpipe final turned out to be an action-packed event with the top riders putting on an adrenaline-pumping show, much to the delight of the snowboarding fans.
