  1. Hello, I am currently a swimmer for my high school team. I have been swimming for 4 years and has loved every second of it! I would Love to answer your questions.

    Q:is it too late? I

A: Its never too late. But let me tell you this, you need to practice EVERY DAY, and i can't stress that enough!!

My first year was a killer, since I never practiced before, but after a few months in the pool i was doing backstroke like a pro.BUT YOU REALLY HAVE TO BE DEVOTED cause there are alot of others who you will have to compete against!

Q:What do i need to take on the first day of tryouts? do i need to buy swimming clothes?

A:That all depends on your team.We brought our own speedos, which were later replaced with our teams speedos. But definitely bring goggles! and be sure to check with the coach and check.

Q:Do i need to shave my legs after i make the team or before tryouts?

A:I suggest you shave your legs BEFORE the tryouts. Not only does it make you a little faster(and believe me EVERY second counts) and it gives you more self-esteem.

  2. I do not believe it is too late to try out for the swim team. Depending on how good you are and how competitive your school is will tell you if you will make the team or whether you will be used in competitions. You can either wear a speedo or a jammer when trying out for the swim team. Keep in mind that you will be trying out for the team, so I would advise you to go with the suit that will make you more comfortable. And yes do shave your legs for the tryout. Body hair will only slow you down. Good luck and try to impress the coach.

  3. 1. NOT TO LATE .. just might be a little embarrassing cause everyone is more advanced then you are

    2. just bring a speedo to swim in and then showering stuff, goggles, and then a change of clothes to change back into, and a bottle of water .. REMEMBER THE WATER ! you will be extremely thirsty !! no need to buy "swimming" clothes ... a speedo or tight tight spandex swimming trunks will do .. just go to your sports authority .. they will know what you need.

3.shave your legs after .. that way in case you dont make it .. you wont be the guy who shaves his legs and ISNT on the swim team. the guys will understand why your legs arent shaven .. jut be like well im new and i dont feel like shaving my legs if i dont have to.

GOOD LUCK ! AND I HOPE YOU MAKE THE TEAM !!!

  4. It is not too late.  Try out.  Suggest getting a couple pair of jammers.  Buy a little small.  It goes by waist size.  If you wear a 32 waist pant then buy the 30.  You will buy a team suit through your team as well.  You will need goggles.  Suggest TYR racetech they have a universal fit, and a wide angle lens that will stay in place even if you don't keep your head down when you dive.  Here is a place that has good prices.

For the first day bring 2 towels, a jammer, and a pair of goggles.  Any bag will do.  Backpacks are fine, duffel bag.  Bring a water bottle, and sweatpants, and flipflops.  And an ipod, deck of cards ect. Lots of swimmers write their name on everything.

You should not shave before tryouts.  Shaving is done for big meets after a taper-which is a period of resting the muscles to let them rebuild.  You should try to get in shape before tryouts.  You can do some running if you don't have access to a pool.

  5. Im pretty sure a REAL swim team requires a speedo ( i know...its disgusting) and you ARENT permitted to wear beach shorts...which sucks.  An overall ( you know the surfing ones) are good....anyways...i dont think that you need your legs shaved...not that i know of...

  6. 1) It's not to late, you can become a good swimmer with hard practice.

    2) If your trying out maybe if you have a friend who can lend you a speedo bathing suit (not A speedo but the brand so the tighter ones that won't fall off) but if that won't work you might have to buy one but they are very expensive, try going to a store that is made specially for swimmers. You will also need a pair of good tight goggles.

    3) It's more of a myth that you have to shave your legs, you only have to do that when you are at a very high rank. Try asking the coach if he would want you to.

(you can trust me I'm a competitive swimmer and this is my life)

  7. No, it's not to late at all. We had kids show up as seniors and only swim for one year.

For the first day you definately need a swim suit. NONE of the guys on my swim team or most of the ones we swim against use speedos. We use jammers, which pretty much look like bicycle shorts. That really depends on the team, though. Neither one is really better than the other so I would just go with your prefernce for the first day, because if you make the team it's going to be replaced by a team suit anyway. Swimming trunks are awful to swim in and REALLY slow you down, so if your tryouts are actually competive, I don't suggest them. You also need a good pair of googles that won't leak or fall off. Go to a sporting goods store and TRY A PAIR ON. Take it out of the packaging (most goggle packages are made so that you can slid them out and try them on before you buy them. you won't get in trouble) and put them up against your face. They should be nice and suction-y.

As for shaving your legs...well...um...none of the guys on our team did that except for the state meet, so unless your team is like SUPER serious and your tryouts are like INSANELY competitive I wouldn't worry about that on the first day.

If you are really worried about it, go and talk to your coach. They love it when kids show enough interest to come and ask them those kinds of questions, and that way you'll know exactly what to be expecting (you don't want to be the only guy who shows up shaven and wearing a speedo if the other guys don't).

  8. Junior in HS, or college?

Ask a team member- especially before shaving your legs!

  9. Its not to late to try out for a sport in your senior year. Pole who have done it for a while probably will be better then you but that okay. Just try to build your skills.  I don't think having swim clothes is that important for the first day because the coach will just see how good of a swimmer you are. Plus you don't want to buy a bunch of stuff in case you don't make the cut. Unless your pretty good, or unless it is a big meet, then most guys don't shave there legs.

  10. I've coached all levels of swimming for 30 years ... 28 at the high school level.

Since it is summer, you really should to join a summer league team or a year round team (USS team) to learn the competitive strokes before high school swim season starts.

On the first day of practice you should have two practice suits.  Speedo (a brand name just as TYR or Nike are also brand names) are needed for competitive practice and racing.  You should get two cheap suits for practice and two pairs of goggles (after practice you'll be hating life if you don't have goggles).   Of course, you need soap, shampoo, and towel(s) for after practice.

Don't waste your time shaving your legs for the purpose of joining the team.  Swimmers shave for the BIG championship meet and, a study from about 1988 by Dr. Rick Sharp, showed that shaving reduces effort by about 15% (you can look it up on google).  But, energy is not the problem for you joining.  Your problem is knowing stroke mechanics (how you move your arms, legs, and head position).

    Good luck!
