Shavonte Zellous stars Indiana Fever hand a 81-72 defeat to Chicago Sky - WNBA Recap
Indiana Fever’s Shavonte Zellous recorded a season high18 points as Indiana Fever dropped Chicago Sky 81-72 at Allstate Arena.
The victory came just a day after Fever’s twelve point defeat at the hands of Atlanta Dream. Indiana didn’t have a single player in double index that night, but made up for that with 4 players touching that index this time.
Shavonte had 18 and forward Tamika Catchings barely missed her double-double with 17 points and 9 assists. Jeanette Pohlen collected 14 points coming off the bench and Tammy Sutton-Brown netted 10 points to go with 8 boards.
Indiana shot 70% from the free throw line while Sky had 64% success. They were marshalled by Sylvia Fowles as she tallied a game high 19 points to go with 10 boards. Forward Swin Cash poured in 17 points while Tamera Young chipped
in with 15. However their efforts couldn’t stop Sky from rolling down to a 3 game losing streak.
Sky opened the game on a 4-0 burst, but Fever rebutted with a huge 14-5 spurt to claim a 14-9 lead. However Chicago narrowed the gap down to 22-21 by the end of period using a 13-7 run.
Sky took full advantage of the impetus gathered earlier, and opened the 2nd stanza with a 6-0 burst, taking a 27-22 lead. Catchings came up with a flurry of freebies that resulted into a 15-6 spurt. With this they reclaimed
their lead and concluded the opening frame. As the teams headed towards their locker rooms Indiana were on the top, 37-33.
Sky’s Courtney Vandersloot opened the third with a trey and reduced the gap down to 37-36. However Fever replied to that furiously, and came up with a 12-nothing run, claiming a double-digit 49-36 lead early in the frame. This
lead helped them to cruise through the stanza as with 2:21 in hand Indiana were leading the scores with an 8 points margin, 56-48.
They capped off the frame with a 7-2 spurt, as the game entered into its last 10 minutes Fever were enjoying a 63-50 lead.
With 3 minutes and 14 seconds remaining in the game, Indiana were holding on to their double-digit 76-65 lead. As the time expired Sky could only come as close as 81-72.
