Gary Shaw picks Bernard Hopkins over Jean Pascal in upcoming bout
Big-shot boxing promoter Gary Shaw has said that he thinks Bernard Hopkins will beat undisputed light heavyweight champ Jean Pascal in their upcoming 18 December bout in Quebec City.
“I think Pascal is making a big mistake by fighting Hopkins. I have all the respect in the world for Hopkins. I think he is going to beat Pascal. I hope I’m wrong, because of our [referring to his fighter
Chad Dawson] rematch clause, but that’s how I feel,” said Shaw to boxingtalk.com.
On 14 August Shaw and his undefeated prospect Dawson fought Canadian Jean Pascal, an underdog, and lost at the Bell Center in Montreal. The fight managed to shock many and rupture Dawson’s glory, who
went into the bout as one of the top American fighters in the world.
Bernard Hopkins, 45, is looking to make history by defeating the much young Pascal and reclaim the Ring light heavyweight title. Hopkins held onto the IBF middleweight title for a record 10 years, with
20 title defences. He is considered a boxing legend.
Shaw recently came under fire after it was determined he had a rupture with star fighter Timothy Bradley. Bradley, the WBO junior welterweight champion, is currently slated to take on WBC/IBF champion
Devon Alexander on 29 January. Fight negotiations have been halted, however, due to a contractual dispute between Shaw and Bradley.
Sources say Shaw wants a contract extension from Bradley, but that he is unwilling to re-sign at this time without looking into other promotional offers first.
Hopkins is an underdog for this fight with Pascal. At 45, he looks like he is close to being completely out of steam. His last bout was against a dull and washed up Roy Jones Jr. in April. He won the
fight in a unanimous decision, but it was roundly criticised for being an unentertaining, sloppy bout.
