Shawn Porter strengthens knocks out win over Patrick Thompson – Boxing News
Shawn Porter, the former NABF welterweight champion, strengthened his undefeated win streak and successfully defended it against fellow countryman Patrick Thompson by collecting a sixth-round technical knockout win in an eight-round bout held on April 28,
2012.
The above bout was a part of the fight card headlined by the championship bout between Chad Dawson and Bernard Hopkins whereas the event was co-headlined by another championship bout between Seth Mitchell and Chazz Witherspoon.
The showdown was promoted by the duo of Gary Shaw Productions and Golden Boy Promotions and the ring for the Saturday night extravaganza was stretched at Boardwalk Hall situated in Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States.
Shawn did not had any problem in taking on Patrick despite the fact that he was seriously outclassed by the latter’s experience. Porter, 24, was entering in his 19th career bout with an undefeated win streak on the line.
The young lad has never lost even a single bout and has collected 13 of his total wins by knocking the opponent out cold. His opponent Patrick, 39, was entering in his 38th bout and possessed a pretty tarnished resume.
The veteran has nailed 18 opponents and only eight of them via knockout whereas he has collected a huge 17 losses as well. In addition, Thompson has never ever been in a title bout as compared to the young surging Shawn.
In an unusual manner, from the very beginning of the clash, Shawn enjoyed the bout and moved here and there evading Patrick literally circling him the whole time. During all those circular movements, every now and then, Porter connected beautifully some
well targeted jabs and fully capitalised his age factor.
With the continuous beating, Thompson got softened and in the sixth round Shawn moved in to make the kill. As soon as Porter entered Patrick’s range, he resisted but those jabs were the last vain attempt of a falling man as they possessed no power in them
and hardly inflicted damage to the energetic Shawn.
During the close exchange of fists, Porter threw two raw powered left hooks that stunned Patrick and eventually provoked the bout-referee to intervene hence finally halting the bout. After the impressive win, Shawn stated, “Definitely going to go back and
take a look at it. I was sharp. There was a point where I got in a little too close. Overall a pretty clean performance, landing a lot of what I wanted and just showcased my skills.”
When asked as to how did he decided to move in for the knockout, Porter informed, “We were seeing it. My punches got faster. He got slower. My corner said it was only a matter of time before that big hook landed.”
With this win, Porter now has 19 victories in his gear out of a total 19 bouts and Thompson has collected his career’s 18th defeat.
