Shawn Stefani wins Midwest Classic in his rookie Web.com Tour season
Shawn Stefani joined the league of players who recorded victories in their rookie season on the Web.com Tour, when he fired a seven-under par 64 on Sunday to take the Midwest Classic title home.
Stefani started off his final round campaign with a tied 13th position. Early during the day, he was a bit shaky and missed some birdie putts. He managed only a two-under par score through the opening nine holes.
The back nine of the course witnessed him take charge on the leaderboard with the help of five birdies. In total, he managed to sign seven birdies on his scorecard while remaining bogey free throughout the day.
The most interesting moment came when he made his second shot on the final hole of the day. After he airmailed the ball, it flew over the green and bounced back after hitting the mesh fence placed at the bottom of the sky boxes.
Moreover, the ball rolled back on the green and stopped a few inches away from the hole. That also allowed him to finish his tournament with a birdie and two strokes ahead of Luke List and Russell Henley.
"That ball at 18 could have kicked several ways, but it broke right for me. Today it went my way," he said. "The win hasn't really sunk in yet, but this is something you dream about as a kid. This is the best thing that has ever happened to me”.
“When the year started I had a couple of goals. One was to win a tournament and the other was to finish in the top 25 and earn my PGA TOUR card," Stefani continued. "I was a little pumped up when I hit that second shot. The adrenaline was going, but the
hardest part was making the putt after my shot".
Stefani’s previous best on the Web.com Tour came in his second start, when he tied for the ninth position at the Panama Claro Championship.
Prior to joining the Web.com, he used to play on different mini tours after turning professional in 2005. In 2011, he recorded his first professional victory at the Texas State Open.
