Shay Given can’t wait for Russia test
Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given believes that his team’s progress in the European 2012 qualifiers will come down to Ireland’s next two games.
Ireland take on Russia on Friday and will then face Slovakia four days later. The Manchester City goalkeeper is looking forward to the home game at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
The Irish international said, "We have only got off to a good start, we know that, and that's all we could do last month. But we know these two games will probably prove where we are as a team and ultimately if we are going to qualify for the European Championships."
The Republic of Ireland have had a great start to their qualifying campaign and have beaten Armenia 1-0 away and Andorra 3-1 at home. Currently, they lead the group on goal difference and are on six points with Slovakia.
The Irish goalkeeper hopes that the home side can take all three points. He said, "Would I take a draw on Friday night? Ideally, we are at home and we want to win, obviously, but we must not lose as well. I don't know. It's a good question. We want to win
the game, but we know Russia have got some great players and it is going to be one of the most difficult games in the group.”
Given has found himself frozen out at Manchester City with Joe Hart taking the number one spot and he will be keen to impress in the match against Russia.

The Irish goalkeeper was asked if he believes that the defence can cope with Russia. "Russia have some big, strong, physical guys up front, but Richard Dunne is pretty big and strong as well. He plays in the Premier League every week and Sean St Ledger has
been fantastic since he came into the squad, and they will relish the challenge.”
