Shayne Cormack satisfied as Mini Hockey World Cup wraps up
The Mini Hockey World Cup concluded at St. Pauls, with England coming out victorious. It was an overall triumphant of the tournament, where the children from U-8 to U-14 graced the colours of the annual hockey gala.
It is worth mentioning here that it was the 10th edition of the hockey tournament which emerged as one of the foremost progressing events. The Mini World Cup was organised by the Namibia Sport Dynamics, under the sponsorship of a popular soft
drink manufacturer.
Shayne Cormack, the organiser of the tournament while speaking to the media, offered thanks and gratitude to the judges, parents and those who assisted them in the arrangements. She further stated that it was a great podium for the schools to promote the
sport culture among the future generations. She stated, “I sincerely hope that the spirit of participation will remain the element that drives you all to continue to be a part of this hockey celebration. A day like this relies solely on the willingness of
the schools and their communities to want to be a part of it, and again the willingness to put such a huge effort into the bells and whistles that contribute to the atmosphere, by going all out to ensure the children are represented with pride and enthusiasm.”
The organiser maintained that she felt great gratification as a member of the tournament’s organising committee for the last one decade. In her views, the event could not be possible without the financial assistance of Namibia Beverages.
There are some seven squads that contested the mega tournament, including the teams from Windhoek Schools and Hockey CC Academy. Katutura and Khomasdal based kids were also a part of the above mentioned teams.
On the other hand, the English boys represented by St. Pauls' School also lifted the Ambassadorial Trophy, after it delivered their best performances in a vast range of categories, which also include dancing, singing and mascot in the opening ceremony. It
was the U-14 Boys' team of Spain that lifted the Best Team Award in the event.
Some seven countries, representing different clubs, participated in the tournament including Australia, St Pauls' U-12 and St. Georges, USA, WAP U-14 Boys and Pioneer’s Park, Scotland, WAP, Germany, Windhoek Gymnasium U-12, St. Pauls U-8, U-10, and U-14,
St. Georges U-10, Holland's Windhoek Hockey CC, Windhoek Gymnasium U8, Spain's Windhoek Gymnasium and England's St. Pauls.
It is vital to mention here that a total of 450 kids contested the entire competitions which are more than four-fold as compared to the first event, in which only one hundred children participated.
Scotland became the winner, while England stood second in U-8 Girls', while England win gold in U-8 Boys and Spain came as a runner-up. In the U-10 Boys' and Girls', England and Spain respectively, secured first podium finish, while Australia and Scotland
grabbed the second spot. Under the category of U-12 Girls and Boys, both the English teams won gold medals, while USA and Spain earned second places. In the U-14 Boys' and Girls', Spain and Scotland earned first positions, while both the English squads secured
the runner-up positions in the Mini World Cup.
England lifted five out of total eight competitions and won the overall title of the mega children event. Apart from the entertainment, this type of tournament is first step to promote the sports at the foundation level which will pay-off in long-term projects.
