Shea Shea set to appear in July Cup – Horseracing news
Shea Shea is all set to represent his owners Mssrs Brian Joffee & Myron C. Berzack in the July Cup at Newmarket.
The six-year-old gelding has been resting since his defeat in the previous race at the Royal Ascot. He was the favourite to win that event, but failed to meet the expectations of his team. However, he is in very good shape at the moment and will definitely
be a force to reckon with in the upcoming competition.
Despite being out of action, Shea Shea has appeared in a couple of training sessions in order to prepare for the July Cup.
Reflecting on the most recent outing, assistant trainer Steve Jell said, “That's his second bit of work at the course, he galloped here before Ascot and he knows what's going on. His work this morning was pretty good and we will analyse the times when we
get home. He's a lot more settled after the Ascot race and after a long break. He was quite fresh going into Ascot.”
Before the King’s Stand Stakes at Ascot, the Mike de Kock’s trainee was looking quite strong, but that did not make much of a difference at the end of the day. It will be important for him to handle pressure on the race day otherwise his opponents will once
again cause problems for him.
When asked about the Ascot failure, Jell added, “It was really gutting, he was in front for such a long time and we would have liked to have been pulled through a bit more. Hopefully he will settle off the pace a bit more in the July Cup and make a run late.”
Although Shea Shea has got a fantastic record, he has never won a Group 1 event for his trainer. He has the ability to do so, but needs to build some confidence before taking part in an important competition.
The South African challenger has participated in a total of 20 races, winning 10 of them. His strike rate is a decent one, but it will go down pretty quickly, if he fails to deliver solid results in the next few races.
