Sheamus becomes number one contender for World Heavyweight Championship: WWE News
The Celtic Warrior, Sheamus, became the number one contender for World Heavyweight Championship after beating Christian and Mark Henry in a triple threat match during Friday Night SmackDown on May 27. Sheamus will face the World Champion, Randy Orton at
WWE pay-per-view event Capitol Punishment on June 19.
Randy Orton won the World Heavyweight Championship five days after Extreme Rules on May 6, during Friday Night SmackDown against Christian. On May 13, the champion, Orton and Christian faced Mark Henry and Sheamus in a tag-team match where they overcame
Henry and Sheamus. The SmackDown General Manager gave the title shot to Christian again. It was announced that Christian would have second chance of retaining his championship at 'Over the Limit' on May 22. Two nights before 'Over the Limit', Christian faced
Sheamus during Friday Night SmackDown on May 20, while The World Champion faced Henry. During the Christian’s match, Henry interfered while Orton came out and made a save. Similarly, Sheamus interfered during Orton’s fight and Christian saved him.
On May 22, at 'Over the Limit', Orton successfully defended his championship after the 20 minutes of brutal match against Christian. On May 27, Christian interrupted Orton at the same time as Orton was giving his comments on 'Over the Limit' victory. Christian
stated that as Orton fought against him, he deserved the victory. Christian said that he needed the title shot again because he knew that he can win the championship.
Sheamus also came out and said that Christian had missed his opportunity and now he would have to wait for that opportunity for 17 years as Sheamus waited. Henry also came out and demanded title shot. The SmackDown GM set up a triple threat match with the
consent of WWE Universe and declared that the winner would face Orton at Capitol Punishment.
The triple threat match took place at the end of the show. During the fight, Christian was caught in a tragedy because of the confrontation of Orton during the match. Christian hit his life-long friend with Edge’s finishing move, Spear, but could not avail
three counts because of referee’s distraction towards Orton. Sheamus took the opportunity and hit the 'Brogue Kick' for victory.
The World Champion looked disappointed that Christian could not become the number one contender, but in fact it was Sheamus.
