Former Newcastle United captain Alan Shearer has backed the return of Andy Carroll to the club by saying that it would be a ‘great move’ for the striker.
Carroll has been the subject of transfer speculation linking him with a move back to his former club. The 23-year old striker moved to Liverpool in a shocking £35 million transfer in the 2010/2011 winter transfer window.
It is believed that Newcastle wanted to bring back the England international on a season long deal this summer and made an official approach for him this past weekend.
The Reds however refused the Magpies’ offer, but have made it clear that they are open to offers for a permanent transfer.
New http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 boss Brendan Rodgers does not see Carroll fitting into the free-flowing and quick attacking football style that he successfully incorporated at Swansea City. Carroll largely operates as a target man, and is deemed as surplus to Liverpool’s
requirements.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-c4244 Shearer recently spoke out on the possible return of Carroll. Speaking to an English newspaper, he said:
"Andy is an http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 centre-forward and I wouldn't say he has been a flop at Liverpool by any means.”
"Yes, it took him a bit of time to settle there but he finished the season strongly and considering he only started one game at the Euros, I thought he did well.”
"Make no mistake; he is a very good footballer. I can fully understand why Newcastle are in for him and I think it would be a great move.”
"When he was there before he benefited from the fact that the team was always working to get him the ball - and he thrived on that. That hasn't always been the case at Liverpool and perhaps at times he suffered."
Shearer believes that Carroll has a shot at redemption with Newcastle and the fans. Carroll quickly became a club hero as he was instrumental in the Magpies’ promotion to the English top flight. Upon their promotion, Carroll saw his goal scoring form improve
as he scored 11 goals in 19 appearances.
The striker’s reputation burst into flames when he joined the Reds last year and his form also diminished as he scored only 6 goals in 42 Premier League appearances for Liverpool.
Shearer is however hopeful that Carroll will be a smash hit upon his return and discover the form that saw him become a powerful and intimidating goal scorer.
