Newcastle United legend, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-c4244 Shearer believes that the Liverpool striker Andy Carroll will only improve in the coming years, despite the English International’s paltry goal tally for the Merseyside club.
The 23-year old arrived at Anfield from Newcastle in January last year for a whooping 35 million pounds fee. Since then, he has only managed to score 11 goals in all competitions in 56 appearances.
However, the towering striker was in red-hot form in the closing stages of the 2011/12 campaign firing a goal apiece in the semi-final and final of the FA Cup, and played the central role in his side’s 4-1 win against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 at Anfield earlier in the month.
His impressive performance at the death of the season was enough to get him an international call up, as the England’s newly appointed manager Roy Hodgson included him in his 23-man squad for the upcoming Euro 2012 competition.
And Hodgson’s decision was welcomed by Shearer, who backed the talented striker to carry his recent form into the next season.
The former English footballer pointed out that the conditions at Newcastle suited Carroll’s game better but felt that at 23 years of age, he has still got a lot of time to establish himself at Liverpool.
He told the reporters, “People forget that the whole system at Newcastle was designed for Andy. That was always the first movement. That hasn't always been the case for him at Liverpool this year.”
“Age is on his side. He absolutely has time.”
Liverpool undertook some big decisions in the last two months, following their dismal 2011/12 league campaign which culminated with the Reds finishing the table at the eighth spot. Earlier, the club fired their director of football Damien Comolli in April
and last week also axed Kenny Dalglish from the management.
However, Shearer advised the Reds against overhauling the entire club structure, and believed that Carroll’s failure to deliver during his first full season at Anfield owes much to his team’s inability to create chances for him.
He continued, “I don't think that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 should change everything just for one player, Liverpool are bigger than that.”
“When you go into the team you want chances as a forward and he probably hasn't had as many as he would have liked.”
