Sheckler Foundation hosts the second Skate For A Cause event etnies skatepark – Extreme Sports News
The second annual Sheckler Foundation Skate For A Cause event went down on Saturday, May 14, at the etnies skatepark in Lake Forest, California. Some of the world’s best skateboarders attended the event to compete in the various contests, to raise money
for charity and spread awareness for autism.
American professional skateboarder, Ryan Sheckler, invited his professional skateboarder friends to participate in the event. A large crowd of over 1000 people came in to see the exciting action sports athletes in action, as well as enjoy the skateboard
carnival village that was loaded with games and activities.
The Skate For A Cause event was held this year to raise money for Autism Speaks, an organisation that is dedicated to fund research and treatment for people living with the disorder. Autism is a brain problem that can appear in the first three years of life
and can make it difficult for children to communicate.
Four contests were featured at the event, with the total prize money equalling to US $15,000. The prize money was donated by various sponsors including Red Bull, CCS, Power Balance and etnies among others.
The contests saw the skateboarders in a skate jam on the park’s various obstacles and features. Steve Caballero kicked-off proceedings by winning the first contest in the Ball Park SkaterCross, to get his hands on the US $3,000 prize money. Chris Cole was
also in attendance at the etnies skatepark and made his presence by clinching the CSS best trick on tranny, to earn US $4,000.
Pat Duffy and Ryan Decenzo had also responded to their friend Sheckler’s call to participate in the event and helped with the noble cause. Duffy showed his innovation and style in the best trick contest on the Red Bull tech centre, to clinch a giant US $4,000
prize cheque. Decenzo also earned himself US $4,000 for landing the best trick on the Power Balance stairs, rails and hubba section.
Following the Sheckler Skate For A Cause tradition where the victors contribute their winnings to charity, the leaders of the four contests donated their prize money to charity, mainly to Autism speaks.
Sheckler created the Sheckler Foundation in an effort to help children, as the organisation also supports and funds a programme that helps injured action sports athletes. The star of the MTV reality show, Life of Ryan, has been widely applauded for his mission.
It is indeed inspirational to see more and more people getting involved in charity work and contributing to the society. Today, many athletes are associated with organisations that work for the benefits of unfortunate people, be it athletes who sustained
a serious injury while participating in action sports or the likes of Japanese people, who are currently in the process of recovering from the earth-quake and the consequent tsunami that struck the nation, last March.
