Sheffield Shield: Bowlers dictate terms in Tasmania-Victoria game
Tasmania trail Victoria by 159 runs with seven wickets remaining in their first innings at the close of play on the first day of a four-day Sheffield Shield game at Hobart.
The wicket at Hobart was good for the bowlers as it offered some movement and bounce. The overcast conditions were also handy for the fast bowlers, which allowed them to trouble the batsmen consistently.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Victoria-c859 were put into bat after George Bailey won the toss for Tasmania. The bowlers did a good job for Tasmania and bundled out the opposition batsmen for 233 runs. In reply, Tasmania reached 74 runs for the loss of three wickets before play was called
off.
Nick Kruger and Ed Cowan started the innings for their team after tea. Both openers played steadily and didn’t play too many risky shots. However, the slow run-rate allowed the Victorian bowlers to attack.
Kruger was dismissed after scoring 11 runs off 36 balls. He was caught plumb in-front of the stumps off the bowling of Peter Siddle. The first-drop http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alex-Doolan-c983 then joined Cowan at the crease and the pair continued to play steadily. They took the total to
70 with a solid 50-run partnership for the second wicket.
Doolan was looking solid until he gave his wicket away in the closing stages of the day. He scored 33 runs off 53 balls and struck four boundaries in his innings. Doolan would have been disappointed in the manner he was dismissed, as he would have liked
to build on the start he had gotten and make a big score.
Young wicketkeeper batsman Brady Jones failed to open his account and was out for a duck. Jones was promoted up the order in order to survive the last couple of overs in the day. However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Bailey-c1480 had to come out and bat for seven balls. He wasn’t troubled
too much and scored two runs until the close of play. Cowan also remained focused and finished the day unbeaten on 25 runs off 76 balls.
Peter Siddle, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Damien-Wright-c1304 took one wicket each for their team. They will be hoping to take full advantage of the conditions tomorrow, when Tasmania resume their innings on the second day of play.
Bailey will be looking forward to constructing a solid partnership with Cowan in order to rescue his team from trouble. If http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854 lose a couple of wickets early tomorrow, it will be difficult for them to bounce back in the match.
The first session of tomorrow’s play will be crucial for both teams.
