Sheffield Shield: James Hopes and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Joe-Burns-c67125 rescue Queensland against South Australia
Queensland reached 213 for the loss of five wickets against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Australia-c844 (SA) at tea on the first day’s play of a Sheffield Shield match at the Adelaide Oval.
The wicket had some moisture beneath it, but there was nothing alarming for the batsmen. This forced James Hopes to bat first after winning the toss for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Queensland-c834. However, the start to the innings was terrible for Queensland as they lost three top-order
batsmen for just 11 runs. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ryan-Broad-c2384 failed to get going and got out after scoring just 3 and 6 runs respectively.
The first-drop Andrew http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Robinson-c86348 was also not able to handle the swing and was sent back to the pavilion without scoring. At 11 for three, Queensland were in deep trouble and it seemed that the decision to bat first had gone against them. However, Hopes and
Joe Burns rescued their team from trouble with some sensible batting. The pair constructed a brilliant partnership for the fourth wicket and took their team’s total to 160 with a 149-run stand.
Both Burns and Hopes complemented each-other very well, as Burns rotated the strike and steadied the innings, while Hopes played some aggressive strokes to keep the scoreboard ticking for his team. However, Hopes was dismissed after a superb innings of 92
runs from just 98 balls. It was certainly a captain’s innings from the veteran all-rounder and he deserved a century. Hopes struck 14 boundaries in his innings.
The wicket of Hopes brought James Floros to the crease and he put together a 52-run partnership with Burns for the fifth wicket. Floros was dismissed on the stroke of tea after scoring 28 runs. This would have been disappointing for Floros and his team as
he failed to capitalise on a good start. The fall of wickets didn’t bother Burns though, and he stayed rock solid at the crease. He didn’t lose his focus and remained unbeaten on 76 when the umpires called the session off.
South Australia’s young debutant http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kane-Richardson-c1765 was impressive with the new ball. The 20-year-old troubled the batsmen with his pace and accuracy and took three wickets for his team. He will be looking to grab a couple more wickets in the last session of
play to finish the day on a high for his team.
