Sheffield United captain Chris Morgan out for the season
Sheffield United captain Chris Morgan has been ruled out of action for the remainder of the season.
Morgan damaged his cruciate ligament during the 1-0 defeat to Coventry City over the weekend. Scans have since confirmed the defender faces a very long spell in the treatment room.
"It's a massive blow for both Chris and the club and realistically we won't see him in action again until pre-season
training next July," said Blades manager Gary Speed.
The news could have a number of negative consequences on the team because Morgan is one of the best defenders in the football club. A less experienced and younger player will
now have to step up and take his place in the team.
A huge blow
The news is a huge blow because Morgan is normally one of the first names down on the team sheet every week. Morgan has played over 250 times for the club and is one of the most
experienced players on the books.
This is important because Morgan has developed a great knowledge of the club and the game during this time. He's able to keep the team together on the pitch and the club settled
away from the pitch.
Another less experienced defender such as Jean Calve or Kyle Bartley may now be asked to fill in the central defensive position. This is dangerous because less experienced players
are more prone to make errors during important games.
Bartley is currently on loan from Arsenal and being thrown in at the deep end as a 19-year-old could set him up well for the future.
"The lads we have that can play in the central defender's role will miss his experience
and spirit, but I'm sure they will do all in their power to make up for his absence," added Speed.
Betting advice
Without Morgan the Sheffield United defence will be more vulnerable. It will be a good idea to wait a game before betting on the team to see how they react with a new back
four.
