Sheffield Wednesday sack manager Alan Irvine

Sheffield Wednesday owner and chairperson Milan Mandaric has confirmed the sacking of manager Alan Irvine with immediate effect.
The former Preston North End manager spent just one term with the club following his six-match winless run in the Npower Championship. Wednesday also lost 5-3 to Peterborough, which proved to be the killing blow for Irvine’s career at the club.
“It is unfortunate, but this had to take place. The decision has been made on what is in the best interests of the club. We will be making further announcements in due course,” stated Mandaric.
The loss has taken the Owls to being 12th in the Championship, 8 points behind a possible play-off position. The side is also just 5 points above the relegation zone and more losses would have meant worst things for the Championship club.
The sacking has come as a surprise to all as Irvine was backed by the owner in the January 2011 transfer window, which was evident from the five signings made by Wednesday during the period.
The likes of Red Johnson, Mark Reynolds, Michael Morrison, Gary Madine and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Isaiah-Osbourne-c17049 joined the club, but nothing has changed since. The management has had enough of the manager and his lacklustre tactics on the pitch. Irvine had recently signed a
3-and-a-half-year contract with the side.
Former Wednesday striker Gary Megson and Coventry manager Iain Dowie have been linked for the vacated post of the manager.
The side has not made their way back into the Premier League since the 1999-00 season and it seems highly unlikely that they would make it in 2010-11 season either. They need to really pick themselves up and start securing all three points from their upcoming
fixtures if they are to have any chance of playing in the Premier League.
