Shelby Rogers upsets Julia Cohen in the opening qualifier - Family Circle Cup 2012
In an all-American contest, 19-years-old Shelby Rogers registered an upset against the 23-years-old Julia Cohen in the first qualifier of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, USA. Crowd witnessed an epic three-setter ending in
favour of the 442nd ranked American 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.
The match lasted for a mammoth two hours and 54 minutes. A world class performance from the wildcard entrant helps her to inch a step closer to the main round of the tournament. Cohen is ranked 158 in the world so the difference
of rankings in both players tells the story itself. It was a majestic upset from a booming teenager.
Rogers took a 2-0 lead at the start with the help of a breakthrough but wasted it away in the following two games courtesy to a poor serve game. However, it didn’t take long for the teen to recover the lead; crafted a breakthrough
in the fifth game and reclaimed the difference in the scores. She consolidated the lead with a serve hold and pushed the scores to 4-2.
In the 10th game, Rogers was serving to take the set but she failed to do so; losing a serve game and allowing her opponent to level the scores at 5-5. However, she reclaimed the lead in the 11th game and
sneaked away a tight serve hold to win the opening set.
A successive exchange of breakthroughs at the start of the second set delighted the crowd. Rogers was the one who fell for the third time in the seventh game but she recovered extremely well to level the scores at 5-5 with a successful
serve break. Her comeback was short-lived as her opponent fought back to win another break in the 12th game that enforced the third set into play.
A swap of breakthroughs in the starting phase of the third set kept the scores together. It was 4-3 in favour of the teen when another breakpoint was converted in her favour. She cruised away to a lead of 5-3 and required a serve
hold to win the match. She did that with ease and booked a date with the Paula Ormaechea of Argentina for a battle of the main round spot.
