Shell Oil Company extends sponsorship deal with Houston Open – Golf news
Shell Oil Company, Houston Golf Association and the Professional Golfers Association Tour have extended their sponsorship deal with the Houston Open and it is likely to continue for the next five years.
The extension of the deal was confirmed by the Shell Oil Company’s president Marvin Odum and PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem in a press conference on Tuesday.
Odum said, “I am pleased and proud that Shell will continue to be the title sponsor of the Houston Open. To me, this is much more than just a golf tournament. It is an opportunity for us to give back to the city and citizens of Houston through charitable
contributions.”
Shell is the leading Oil Company in United States, which is known for supplying gas and petrol to 100 countries of the world. It joined hands with the tournament in 1992 and their partnership is still going strong to date. The oil company has been involved
in charity work with the tournament and together with HGA, it has contributed more than $50 million to the local charities. In 2010, the Shell Houston Open generated $2.145 million funds for the charity by organising various activities during the tournament.
Odum added that his team would continue working with the flagship event of the PGA Tour in the future, as it was an honour being affiliated with one of the oldest events on the Tour. The Houston Open started in 1946, which makes it the 10th oldest
event on the PGA Tour. Shell started working with the Houston Open in 1992, which also makes it the third longest sponsorship on the Tour.
Similar sentiments were shared by Finchem, who expressed immense gratitude for Shell Oil for being with them for a long time. He said that Shell has been a perfect partner in difficult times.
He said, “We are thrilled that Shell will continue its longstanding support of the Shell Houston Open. Shell has been a terrific partner of the PGA Tour and Houston Golf Association and has contributed significantly to the tournament's growth and charitable
and economic impact in the Houston area.”
In addition to that, he thanked the HGA for the abundant charity work. He said that the HGA has contributed more than $53.1 million in golf-related events since 1974. It has six charities on its panel for each season and it is known for sponsoring the junior
golf tournaments in the region.
Once again, Shell Oil Company will return to Houston with the tournament, which will be attended by some of the best golfers of the world. The event is considered as a warm-up tournament before the Masters.
