Shelly-Ann Fraser tested positive for doping
A specialist in the arena of hundred meters, Shelly-Ann Fraser is a sprinter who is needy of no introduction. Jamaican by origin, this twenty four year old athlete has demonstrated athletic wisdom which is truly hard to discover at such a tender age. Crowned both the Olympic champion and the World Champion over hundred meters, with a completion time period of 10.78 and 10.73 seconds, Shelly-Ann Fraser has truly indicated her true potential and worth.
She also has the distinction of being labelled only the second fastest female sprinter to be holding both the Olympic and World hundred meter titles, and currently also shares honour of being the fourth fastest female athlete in the field of hundred meters with Christine Arron. Considering her impressive track record, it is therefore not at all astonishing to discover that this athlete has displayed an interest in athletics ever since her school days.
The Beijing Olympics in 2008 provided Shelly-Ann Fraser with another reason to rejoice and memoir to cherish as she was gifted with a gold medal in the hundred meter sprinting, not only allowing her to improve her own time period from 11.35 in the first leg to 11.06 in the second leg, but also being crowned with the honour of being the first ever Jamaican woman in the history of the country to win a gold medal at the Olympics for the hundred meter race.
The 2009 Berlin Championships provided another feather in the hat to Shelly-Ann Fraser, as she grabbed the title with a time period of 10.88 seconds, and it needs to be noted that this feat was accomplished with an exceptionally challenging headwind with a velocity of 1.5 meters per second. This event allowed her to establish herself as the holder of the fourth fastest time in the history of the championship, as well as a national record.
With the Samsung Diamond League currently in full swing, providing athletic lovers with unimagined entertainment in the form of the various delightful performances showcased every single day, it seemed that Shelly-Ann Fraser would be granted with another occasion to advocate her athletic class.
Yet, in an unfortunate turn of events, Fraser was forced to withdraw just ahead of her meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland on Thursday under the banner of the prestigious Samsung Diamond League. According to Shelly-Ann Fraser’s track club president Bruce James, Fraser had been tested for doping, and the results turned out to be positive.
While both Fraser and James maintain that Fraser had taken some medication to treat and alleviate a troubling toothache, the results of the reports do raise some speculation. Regardless of that, Bruce James has consistently maintained that the violation is extremely minor, and they have nothing to conceal, which is why the test results have been made entirely public.
While currently the magnitude of the situation is not entirely clear, one hopes that this doping violation does not result in being a hindrance in Shelly-Ann Fraser’s career and an obstacle to achieving further accolades in the spectrum of athletics.
It would certainly be a shame to watch such a talented athlete bid farewell to her passions owing to a doping violation. With the event of the Samsung Diamond League well behind, one hopes Fraser can continue to fascinate everyone in other tournaments that come her way in the future.
