Shergar Cup 2011 with its origination and history
Shergar Cup is an exclusive racing event which is held once a year, at one of the famous race course of United Kingdom, Ascot. The royal Family of United Kingdom, is very closely connected with this racecourse, it is owned by the Ascot Racecourse Ltd.
The exclusive event is named after a legendary thoroughbred Shergar after his kidnapping. This event is held every year, jockeys are assigned in different teams, where they have to compete against each other.
Four teams are made, the jockeys earn points in accordance to their race, at what point they have finished. Punters bet on jockeys who will win the race or achieve the top score. This year the cup was held at ascot on the 6th of August 2011.
Jockeys who finished first were given 15 points, whereas for those who came second were given 10 points, who finished third, were assigned with 5 points and the fourth ones, were given 3 points.
Six races were scheduled, all were handicap, each team was made up of three jockeys, which were divided into Great Britain, Europe, Ireland and Rest Of World.
Hayley Turner, Paul Hanagan and Jim Crowley were teamed up for Great Britain, while Richard Hughes, Fan Berry and Colm O’Donoghue were in the Irish team. Olivier Peslier, Mirco Demuro and Christophe Lemaire teamed up for Europe and team Rest Of World had
Doug Whyte, Yutaka Take and Hugh Bowman.
The Irish team won the cup with 70 points, Colm O’Donoghue gained 25 points following with the team member Richard Hughes with 23 points and Fran Berry with 22 points.
Great Britain with 70 points came second in the event, Paul Hanagan with a superb performance scored 35 points, he was rewarded with the Top Rider reward, along with £3,000 of prize money and a silver saddle.
His other team members, Jim Crowley scored 16 points and Hayley Tuner scored 12 points.
Rest Of World came third, the highest scorer in this team was Hugh Bowman with 25 points, 17 points were scored by Douglas Whyte and Yutaka Take scored 15 points.
Europe finished fourth in the event, Mirco Demuro was the top scorer in this team with 25 points, Christophe Lemaire scored 20 points and the low scorer of the cup was, Olivier Peslier who scored 5 points.
Shergar Cup is a very prestigious event, which was named in the honor of a legendary Irish horse Shergar, he was born in 1978. This icon is famous for his major wins and achievements, owner Aga Khan IV had $ 684,479 of the total earnings.
Son of Great Nephew out of Sharmeen won the Gaurdian Classic Trial, Cheter Vase, Epsom Derby, Irish Derby and the K. George VI & Q. Elizabeth Stakes in the year 1981. The bay stallion was rewarded in the same year as the European Horse of the Year.
The unlucky stallion was kidnapped on the 8th of February 1983, many investigations took place but nothing worked out. The inauguration of the Shergar Cup was done in 1999 at Goodwood racecourse, now the race is scheduled at Ascot racecourse between
four teams Great Britain, Europe, Ireland and Rest Of World.
