Sheryl Swoopes scores 22 as Tulsa Shock stun Connecticut Sun - WNBA Recap
Sheryl Swoopes scored a game high 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Tulsa Shock beat Connecticut Sun 83-72 on Sunday night at BOK Center. This was Shock’s second victory in a row after a 20 game tailspin and in doing so,
they also snapped Connecticut’s two-game winning streak.
Swoopes, who hit a game-winning jumper with two seconds to go against Los Angeles Sparks in the previous game, ended with 9 for 17 shooting from the field.
Ivory Latta added 19 points on an 8 for 11 shooting from the floor, including 3 for 5 from three points range, and dished out 6 assists in the victory. Tiffany Jackson recorded her eighth double-double of the season with a game
best 12 rebounds and 16 points. Amber Holt also had 10 points and four assists for Tulsa.
Tina Charles led Connecticut with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Charles, the reigning ‘rookie of the year’, also blocked two shots and finished with a 9 for 13 shooting from the field. Renee Montgomery chipped in 12 points for the
Sun, who are second in the Eastern Conference with an 18-11 record.
Tulsa shot 57.1 percent (32 for 56) from the field and 76.5 percent (13 for 17) from free throw line while Connecticut shot only 41.1 percent (30 for 73) from the floor and 50 percent (7 for 14) from the line. Tulsa continued to
struggle with turnovers as they committed 13 turnovers as compared to only six by the Sun.
Charles scored 17 of her 21 points in the first half of the game as Connecticut held an 11-point lead, 43-32, at halftime. Tulsa made a comeback in the third quarter and trimmed their halftime deficit to just two points, 57-55,
with 01:44 to go in the quarter. Nearly one and half minutes later, they tied the game at 59-59 and that was the way, the quarter ended.
In the fourth quarter, Shock’s interim coach Teresa Edwards made a savvy move and introduced Abi Olajuwon into the line up. Olajuwon defended Charles from every angle and held her scoreless in the quarter. Tulsa took full advantage
of the situation and outscored Connecticut 24-13 to secure only their third victory of this season.
