Shifting an automatic?

Hey yall. My uncle has a trailblazer ss and its an automatic but he shifts it? I've also heard of shifting automatics a little bit from other places. How do you do that and what good does it do?

I'm pretty sure it could be a semi-automatic.  My mom has an Audi and she showed me that you drive it just like an automatic but sometimes if you feel like it, you can shift it.  I know nothing about cars, this is just my vague memory.  Hope it kind of helped!
