I have an automatic C4 Corvette and was wondering if it is safe to shift from drive to overdrive while moving - prior to entering the freeway. And the opposite while exiting the freeway... I live in a hill area so want it in drive when i get off the freeway but am not sure if it is safe to shift from (D) to D while the car is moving.... Thank you everyone .... Tysha

  1. Agree with the first answer.

  2. This is a safety issue if you're on the gas hard enough to break the tires loose while downshifting but it isn't a mechanical issue.  The car should take it even if you're somewhat abusive about it.  If you do it with a light-to-medium foot on the gas, it's no problem at all.  Be careful downshifting on wet roads, though.  That's when when you need a light foot.

  3. As long as your not under acceleration. I would do it while coasting.

  4. as long as the speed is down it should not cause a problem, even if it is going too fast, the trans should mimic a neutral until speed gets to a safe speed, then it will drop into gear.

  5. absolutely...happy motoring

  6. sure you can. i do it once in awhile myself. it wont hurt nothing, but i would,nt do it at high speeds.

  7. Yes that's fine. It won't hurt a thing. I usually let off the gas first.
