Shigeki Maruyama and Paul McGinley to tee off in Indonesia Open
Japanese ace Shigeki Maruyama and Irishman Paul McGinley have decided to become a part of the Indonesia Open, which is the seventh stop on the OneAsia Tour. The US$1 million event, presented by Enjoy Jakarta, will take place at
the Pantai Indah Kapuk Course of Damai Indah Golf Club from July 14 to 17, 2011.
The news was confirmed by the tour officials via the OneAsia website. The website said the two veterans had their names registered for the event and will be making their debut appearance in the four-day session.
Maruyama, who is recognised as a prominent figure in Japanese golf for his numerous wins, called the tour officials on Tuesday and had his name registered.
The veteran is a three-time winner on the Professional Golf Association Tour, which includes Greater Milwaukee Open, Verizon Byron Nelson Classic and Chrysler Classic of Greensboro. Maruyama’s recent win on the PGA tour was last
witnessed in 2003, when the 41-year-old ousted Brad Faxon with a five-stroke margin.
After that win however, Maruyama could not emulate a similar performance in American fields, which resulted in his decision to return to his home soil. After a gap of six years, the Japanese pro won the Golf Nippon Series JT Cup,
which added to his glorious career on the One Asia tour, which already had nine wins.
Another golfer included in the field is McGinley, whose name is synonymous with the Ryder Cup triumph. The Irishman helped Europe win the 2002 Ryder Cup after he rolled a birdie putt on the last hole to add half a point in the
grand aggregate of 151/2 amassed by the European team. His reputation took him to the stage of 2004, 2006 and 2010 Ryder Cup, where he helped his team win.
McGinley and Maruyama are two prominent figures in golf, which means their appearance in the event will attract more sponsors and add to the strength of the field. OneAsia tour is in a growing phase and names like this duo affiliated
in events will help it to grow and expand.
