Question:

Shih Tzu, Maltese Or Jack Russell, Which Is Best For Me ?

I'm looking for a new pet. I have narrowed down my choices to three different breeds. My daughters are aged 4 and 12. We want a dog that we can cuddle, pick up and play games with, and it cannot require more than 1 hour exercise per day. Any idea's or things not so good with one of those breeds. Grooming is also not a problem and also we are DEFINITELY getting a female.

Thank you

  1. If you're only able to give 1hr a day for exercise than DO NOT get a jack russell..... if it doesn't drive you nuts because of all the pent up energy she'll end up destroying your house from boredom chewing

  2. Are you joking? A dog that doesn't require excercise for more than an hour a day?

    Get a cat.

  3. If they're daughters then probably a maltese because they're so cute and loving. Cairn terriers are also nice. Malteses don't need need much exersise but they require a lot of grooming at least 3 days a week. Jack russels shed and thats a big problem with our family i dn't know about u. If i were yoou i would get a male because they tend to be more cuddly and affectionate. Shih tzus are nice too, but they get ooverwieght easily.

  4. What about a lhasa apso? They are rather sweet. The person who said small dogs can be snippy is right some them can be. I work professionally with dogs and lots of other critters, two of my clients are lhasa apsos. They are just the sweetest little guys. I also have a client who is a jack russell in the same home as a two year old baby. I have never experienced any trouble between the baby and the jack russell but I really wouldn't suggest one for you. Jack Russells have great personalities but they can be aggressive when it comes to toy sharing and they are exactly like the energizer bunny, they never stop! I have inadvertently gotten bitten on more than one occassion by the jack russell. Let me stress he did not mean any harm, he just got carried away wanting his toy from me. Good luck I hope you find the right one for you!

  5. Well their all little dogs which can be snippy. But if you get one from a GOOD breeder, (one that doesn't breed aggressive or bad dogs) then it shouldn't become a problem.

That page shows dogs and their reliability with children. All three of those dogs earned a 4. Which means they are better with older children.

I would consider a Bichon Frise. They earned a 2 for reliability with children (2-Usually good with children)

Their cuddly and cute! And all dogs require more then an hour of excercise, expessially if puppies!

    Good luck!
