Shin Baek Choel, Eom Hye Won become Mixed Doubles champion of 2012 Korea Open GP Gold
Mixed Doubles partners Shin Baek Choel and Eom Hye Won showed superb coordination and defeated Yoo Yeon Seong-Jang Ye Na in the final round of Korea Open Grand Prix on December 9, 2012.
This epic tussle prolonged to one hour and 19 minutes before ending with decisive figures of 11-21, 21-18 and 25-23.
The scratch Korean pair Baek Choel-Hye Won performed beyond expectations and unseated the World Number 14 duo Yeon Seong-Ye Na with 2-1 margin.
However, it was not an easy win as they had to sweat hard to come back from a horrendous start. They took some time to get settled and this sluggishness cost them a vital match point.
Meanwhile, the top seeded couple made best out of its opposing team’s blunders and established an early lead.
In the opening game, Yeon Seong and Ye Na made their intentions clear straight away in the beginning as they prevailed in the establishing rallies and left their challengers far behind with a notable margin.
They maintained that rhythm all the way to half time and piled up a mountainous figure of 11.
This initial advantage helped them also in latter part of the game as they widened the gap and finished first set with a significant ten-point lead in 21-11 score.
However, story was entirely different in the next game as the suppressed duo of previous segment showed a transformed character and turned the tables.
This time Baek Choel and Hye Won played with right attitude and fortitude and turned their rivals’ plans of a straight-set victory into dust.
Initially, they played cautiously and increased their pace gradually. They clinched few back-to-back points just before the interval and then strengthen their grip with some productive rallies immediately after the break.
The twosome of Yeon Seong and Ye Na could not withstand this intensive attack and knelt down after reading 18-21 total on the board.
Third set proved real test of their mental and physical strength as both pairs had to put an extra effort to claim this final match point.
They remained equal until last shot was played and this game of throne ended when Baek Choel-Hye Won placed a winning score of 25-23.
