Question:

Shin Splints... i just don't know what to do anymore!?

My ordeal began three years ago when i went out for the wrestling team. I started jogging to help get in shape as i had never played a sport before, and i was in pain before the season even. It has lasted ever since, never completely going away. The pain occurs on the inside of my shin and (for those versed in anatomy) would best be described as "Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome".

I have followed the typical advice such as stretching, strengthening and icing. As i over-pronate, i had custom orthotics made and wear supportive shoes. I have had gait analysis done and i am well within the normal motion range.

I have had two stress fractures and the pain has kept me from a great deal of training. I can just keep on taking ibuprofen to get through practices but my stomach feels bad all the time and i can barely walk when i'm off it. I feel like i've given my body to my sports but this keeps me from reaching potential.

Has anyone had a problem like this? anyone know what more i could do?

  1. I have been running for 8 years now and would recommend the following:

I would strengthen the core: calves, quads, hams, back and abdominal (the "six pack" muscles along with the obleks), chest and arms. But when strengthening these muscles, I would focus more on the muscle endurance not the muscle bulk. For more advice for this, I would consult with a personal trainer. For the running part, I would stay flexible as it helps/contributes to your balance (so do the muscles in your core) but also helps prevent some injuries like pulled muscles and shin splints. Also, I would try to make up a schedule where you can run for X amount of days and try to have a long run. I would start off slowly, running about 2-3 miles per run for the first week and increase my mileage per week. Make sure you have the following: a good diet, hydration, sleep, a good sense on how to take care of your body, and sleep. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Good Luck!!!

  2. make sure you have enough cushioning in your shoes

    use compression socks

    ICE

if you run, run on soft surfaces (NOT PAVEMENT!!!!!)

advil, cuz its an anti-inflammatory...not just a painkiller
