I had shin splints about two and a half weeks ago, and it was terrible. During my shin splints, my second toe on my left foot became like numb. Not "no feeling" but Its different... if you know what I'm trying to get at. Like, you could hit it and feel it, but its kinda numb.

THEN, my big toe kinda got it.

PLEASE HELP!

I need to know what to do?!?!

  1. i know!!!!!! talk to your doctor. but i have the same "weird" feelings in my feet. its numb, but not at the same time. its a curculary problem. your blood is not feeding the nerves correctly.

  2. Is it still numb? Is your toe weak? Is there swelling in the front of the leg?  This could be a sign of anterior compartment syndrome which is related to shin splints, but is actually a problem where the pressure builds up in the front compartment of the leg and can lead to numbness, weakness, pain and swelling due to compression on blood vessles and peripheral nerves.

Is it resolving or getting worse?  If getting worse, I would seek an opinion from an orthopedist immediately.  Anterior compartment syndrome sometimes requires surgical decompression.  If getting better, just let it do that.

The other consideration is: is there any concorrent low back pain? This is a common referral pattern from a low back problem.

...long story short, if things are getting better, let them do that...if worsening, see an orthopedist.
