I have a model T231 and it's only about a year or so old. I've never had trouble with it. I let it sit out in my driveway for about 3 weeks running...just got busy and forgot it was out there in all honesty. If you knew our schedule you'd know why it was left out there...anyhow, It got rained on a few times. Ever since it's not ran well. I went to start it the other day and it wouldn't start. It has fresh gas/oil mix in it. It would run for my son but would not throttle well. Yesterday, it wouldn't start at all. I took out sparkplug and cleaned it with steel wool but it looked fine. But it wouldn't start...not once. Now, today, I go to start it up and it started...and idles just fine but when I hit the throttle on it..it quits instantly. The little bubble that gets the gas started into the tube will get stick now. You press it once or twice and it doesn't want to pop back out. Anyhow, why does this thing keep shutting off when I hit the throttle but it idles just fine?

  1. Clean the air filter.

  2. Did you look into the gas tank and check for water?  It will look like a blob on the bottom of the tank.  There is a fuel filter on the end of one of the lines, it could be plugged.  That would cause the primer bulb to not pop back out.  Water will cause problems like that too.  Are there adjustable jets on the carburetor?  Usually there are two, a high and low speed.  Try turning the low speed jet out 1/4 turn.  If that doesn't help turn the high speed jet out 1/4 turn.  If the fuel filter is clean, no water in the tank and adjusting the jets don't work, you need to rebuild the carb.  A kit costs about $15.00 it is an easy job and you can get the kit at any small engine repair shop.

  3. It needs a tuneup/carb cleanout (about$150 hired)or rebuild if you can find the kit.

  4. Let it warm up a little bit. And then after a couple minutes press very easy on throttle, until you get to where you can just hammer it full throttle.

Check your gas/oil mixture - is it right?

Are you using old gas from last year? Empty out and start over with new gas and oil.
