The Japanese international has expressed his delight with the start to the second phase of the campaign and is confident of retaining the Bundesliga title.
Borussia Dortmund restarted the proceedings after the winter break with a comprehensive win against Hamburg in the Bundesliga. Jurgen Klopp’s side thrashed Rothosen 5-1 in their own backyard to go level on points with league leaders
Bayern Munich, who suffered a shock loss at the hands of Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday.
Kagawa claimed that the competition at the top is getting more and more exciting as the season unfolds. He insisted that it was a lot easier last season as Borussia Dortmund were leading with some margin at this point in the previous
campaign and admitted that the team cannot afford any more hiccups in the remaining six months.
The midfielder claimed that the win against Hamburg was very important as the team wanted to start the second-half of the campaign on a high and the margin of victory shows that the Borussians are up for the challenge for the Bundesliga
title.
“It is very exciting, isn't it? Last season we were marching ahead but now every game is important. We knew that this game is so important, to start well in the second round was extremely important,” he was quoted as saying in
an interview.
The former Cerezo Osaka player admitted that Hamburg were very defensive in the clash on Friday and played with negative tactics. He added that the defenders passed the ball back on numerous occasions but his side worked hard for
the win and showed their class in the end.
“It was a little frustrating, how often they played the ball back to their goalkeeper. But we have not given up, defended well and waited for errors, so we were able to counter. I think early in the second half everything worked
and I could turn it up a gear,” he concluded.
