Shinsuke Yamanaka stuns Vic Darchinyan and retains the WBC bantamweight gold – Boxing News
The surging Japanese pugilist, Shinsuke Yamanaka, startled the entire boxing universe by unanimously nailing the heavily experienced Vic Darchinyan, the former IBO bantamweight champion, in a 12-round encounter. Shinsuke successfully retained the WBC bantamweight
gold in his first ever title defence bout.
The Friday night headline bout stole the whole pay-per-view and the spectators with great excitement gave a standing ovation to the man of the night, Yamanaka, who defied all odds and grabbed an outclass win over the veteran Vic.
Yamanaka, 29, was entering in his career’s 18th bout. The Japanese number one bantamweight was seriously overshadowed by Vic in various basic brawling aspects. Shinsuke boasted 15 wins in his resume and 11 of them by knockout.
Vic, on the other hand, was in his career’s 43rd bout. With a hefty experience, a height advantage that eventually gave him an upper hand as far as the reach is concerned, number of knockout wins, huge pile of various apex divisional titles, all these aspects
clearly showed that Yamanaka will definitely lose his title but this did not happen at all.
From the very first round, the knockout lover Vic started pounding the champion and made him move here and there in the ring. Darchinyan, infamous as the ‘Raging Bull’, used his reach advantage optimally and till the end of the fourth round was leading all
the three score cards. The whole scenario got bloodied when Yamanaka, who was trying to understand Vic’s stance, leashed his counter attack and gifted Vic with a deep cut over right eye.
Darchinyan, who was successfully countering Yamanaka’s southpaw stance, got stunned by the left jab which played a decisive role in the later rounds. From then onwards, it was Yamanaka who dictated the pace of the bout and pummelled Vic’s body and face by
his left hooks.
In the 11th round, it clearly seemed that Vic has got fatigued and the gushing blood from the right eye cut kept on disturbing his vision as a result Yamanaka was able to find the requisite gap and threw a powerful left hook that rattled Vic’s senses.
As a desperate measure, Vic strived hard in the final round to gather as much points possible but Yamanaka nullified all his attacks and later on collected an impressive 117-111, 116-112, and 116-112 score victory in his favour.
After the bout the excited Yamanaka said, “I defeated a big name. I think everybody will recognise me with this victory. It pretty much went according to plan. I was able to land some good punches and take the momentum from him as the bout went on.”
This win is definitely a milestone for Yamanaka who now has 16 wins in a total 18 engagements. Vic, on the contrary, who was deciding to make a huge comeback, needs to rethink his presence in the sport since he has lost a second consecutive bout against
a pugilist who is least experienced. The Armenian now has five losses in his resume.
