Question:

Ship building at Chatham?

Duncan Cameron was on the ship Charles Copper 1871 census. As he was a ship builder/labourer I assume he was working on it not sailing it. His base was Jarrow. The only reference I can find to a Charles Copper was an industrialist in Liverpool. Can anyone tell me where I might look for records of this ship - Charles Copper.

  1. I'm afraid this isn't a very sophisticated answer but one of my ancestors was a ship's captain and he managed to sink his off the coast of New Zealand.  I found this out by simply 'googling' the name of the ship.

I've just tried this with yours and came up with one in the Falkland Islands which was built in the US so I'm assuming it's not the same one.  However, it might be worth you trying when you have a bit more time.  You'll be amazed what records there are to be found.

Sorry I can't be more help!

  2. He could have been the ships carpenter who went to sea to carry out running repairs
