  1. Tradition holds that the Captain goes down with the ship, but if he can get the heck off, why not?  AFter everyone else, of course.

And the owner is usually someone else.

  2. That is NOT TRUE and there are numerous cases just recently when the Captain was the first one off the ship, let alone went down with it.

The logic of the "Captain went down with the ship" is.. even if it's NOT HIS FAULT... his career as a sea captain IS OVER... he will never get another ship unless he buys it himself... so he may as WELL BE DEAD because his life is over... so going down with the ship is the honorable way to avoid all the embarrassing questions he is going to have to answer at the Naval Board of Inquiry

  3. Not true.

  4. It's more of a general suggestion than actual rule.

  5. The captains first responsibility is to the passengers and crew, once they are off the ship then he can abandon the ship. He can be sued if he was responcible for geting them into trouble but theres no law that says he has to be the last one off or go down with the ship.

  6. NOT>Last to leave if he isn't off before it goes down>He joins Davy Jones Locker>

  7. not if he can help it, but customarily, he's the last to abandon ship
