Question:

Shipping across Canadian border for Canadian citizens?

I am a Canadian citizen, live in a border city with the US. (Windsor, Ontario/ Detroit Michigan). I've been reading that on Canadian - US border, when I am going back to Canada, I can claim up to CAN$400 worth of goods without paying any duties if I am absent for 48 hours or more. My question is - how the border officers know how long I have been absent?

Need an answer ASAP.

Thanks.

  1. The border services put your name into the computer when they check your ID as your cross.  (and these days EVERYONE gets checked for ID)

They may not catch you as you come back, but internal reviews are done.  Canada Revenue Agency and Service Canada are two of the places that do audits on comings and goings.

Also, you honestly never know when a "friend" will make an anonymous tip that you committed fraud.  (it happens all of the time)

If you are just a few dollars over, not as big a deal.. A few hundred and not only will you have to pay a penalty of 25-80% of the costs of the goods,  but you can be charged with fraud and all that entails, including seizing your vehicle  Is it worth the risk?

(and check on how long you are gone for...it isnt just 48 hours or more...more days can mean you can bring back more too)

  2. When you crossed into the US your identification was checked and your crossing was recorded, so they have a record of when you crossed.  All that information is immediately available to border officials, and is also transmitted to other government agencies in Canada who may need to know.  For example, you are not eligible to collect EI benefits when out of the country, so EI records also keep track of who has crossed the border.  Someone is always watching.  Nothing is anonymous anymore.

  3. Google North American Union

    Google the Amero

    Google NAFTA

    Hope This Helps...

  4. I can't tell you but they know, don't try to lie
