Shipping cockatiel from breeder?

Do you think that you can get a good bird if you have never met it before? Everyone keeps saying to get a bird from a breeder so I decided to look it up and there are none near my home (Germantown, Maryland) that I can find. Can someone help me find a reliable breeder that ships?

  1. NO WAY! I wouldnt trust them to give me a good bird. Its hard enough to choose the right one when you go to a pet shop. Ask around - maybe the pet shops near you will tell who their supplier is and you can go straight to the source. Ask friends that breed other birds too - you never know - they might know someone. My budgie is from a friend's young brother who breeds birds but he is only 14 so is not listed as a 'breeder'. He really knows his birds though. Great quality. What Im trying to say is word of mouth is the best way i think

  2. Yes, if you find a reputable breeder, get references and *check* the references.  One of my birds was shipped from another state and he's wonderful!

I would join a Yahoo group that's dedicated to cockatiels.  You'll meet a lot of tiel owners, be able to ask a lot of questions and you'll hopefully also meet a lot of breeders.  If the group is a good one the members will help you located a good breeder.

Birds usually shop very well if they are shipped "Counter to Counter".  They are hand carried onto the plane and hand carried off the plane (instead of being left out on the tarmac with the luggage).  A good breeder will know how to ship the bird so it is safe and arrives healthy.

Good luck on your search.  Sounds to me like you're off to a good start!

  3. Go to www.birdbreeders.com, there they have breeders and you can view their ratings. On the right side of the page, toward the bottome you can click on Maryland to see if there are any close to you.
