Question:

Shipping live frogs?

I am shipping live African clawed frogs tomorrow. I'm going to ship them in a USPS priority mail box, marked "this end up" and "fragile--handle with care". I'm shipping them in tupperwear containers. Since ACF's are totally aquatic, I'm wondering if there should be airslots in the top of the tupperwear or not? Are their lungs small enough that they don't need air slots? I'm afraid if I put air holes, and then the box tips over in shipping...Oh, you know what I mean! Also, they will be shipping through HOT temps (it's august). So, do I put one of those ice pack things or not? ALSO, WILL THE USPS run all priority boxes through an X-ray machine? I bought chicken eggs for hatching off eBay and they didn't get X-rayed. What will happen if they do find out they're animals in the box? Doesn't USPS allow animal shipments?

  1. check everything out with the post office. They'll be able to tell you

  2. They should be fine. an option for the heat is a styrofoam container.

  3. Well dont send in a tupperware bowl.

place them in a triple zip lock bag.

tape all sides.including top, double tape it.

then put in a square bowl. tape lid on tight.

then tape them on bottom of  box, pack other stuff around it, like old rags,i ship plants, live pets threw there. DO POKE WHOLES IN BOWL OR BOX.

when sending package, put there address on it like they sent to there selfs.

also check this yahoo group out, they talk about many other pets, plants, fish etc.

  4. Yes, the USPS allows live animal shipments. They posted information regarding this on their web site:

Do not ship it by regular priority mail with this end up, fragile note etc... postal workers laugh at those. Your frogs would arrive dead.

They might also get x-rayed if not shipped as "live animals". Packages are x-rayed randomly, you never know which one will be picked.

If you want them to handle your package appropriately, you have to pay for the live animal shipping.

I would not use tupperwear containers, the lid can pop off. Use a container with s***w-on lid.

If the frogs have lungs already, you have to leave an air pocket inside the container.

The lid has to be airtight though, to prevent spillage. You cannot poke air holes in the lid.

A cold pack would most likely improve their chances of arriving alive.

    Best of luck!
